Haliey Welch — better known as the “Hawk Tuah” girl — launched a crypto coin that plummeted in value within minutes of its launch.

Welch on Wednesday evening announced the coin $Hawk was officially live to purchase on the blockchain platform Solana. Included in the tweet was a short video of her excitedly saying, “My Hawk meme coin is live!”

In the world of cryptocurrency, a meme coin is a crypto coin that originated from some kind of internet meme. Arguably the most infamous meme coin is Dogecoin, which was made in reference to a viral photo of a Shiba Inu.

Welch posted the tweet at 5:20 p.m. ET. Within half an hour, early investors took to social media to report massive losses.

“Hi @HalieyWelchX My $35,000 that I purchased of $Hawk is now $2,000 after 10 minutes of buying,” one user claimed. “I am a huge fan of Hawk Tuah but you took my life savings. I purchased your coin $Hawk that you were so excited about with my life

savings and children’s college education fund as well. You didn’t mention that you were going to buy 97% of the supply and sell it almost immediately to make a large profit. If I would have known that information I would have not purchased your coin. Please help me or who can I contact for refund? If not I will be forced to use legal action.”

Twitter user AshRobin also reported immediate losses, stating that he was already down $20,000 by 5:49 p.m.

In another video, crypto influencer BentoBoi explained how 96% of the supply of Welch’s coin was in one cluster — meaning insiders allegedly owned almost all of the supply.

According to another tweet — which included a screenshot of transactions — those insiders then began selling the coin and its value took a harsh nosedive.

In response, Welch posted another tweet claiming members of the Hawk Tuah team had not been selling the coin. A community note under the tweet accused her of lying with a link to another screenshot of transactions.
