Before all hell broke loose in Charlottesville, Virginia today at the ‘Unite the Right’ rally, thousands of white nationalists, neo-Nazis, alt-righters and white supremacists gathered on the streets for the since-canceled march. A morning after hundreds of white nationalists took part in a torch-lit march and chanted “white lives matter,” one of the most notorious white supremacists in the country celebrated what the rally represented.
And he invoked the president’s name while doing so.
While speaking to reporters this morning, a smiling David Duke made the following observation when asked what the rally meant to him:
“This represents a turning point for the people of this country. We are determined to take this country back. We are going to fulfill the promises of Donald Trump. That’s what we believed in. That’s why we voted for Donald Trump because he said he’s going to take our country back.”
The rally ended up being canceled by law enforcement due to violent clashes between the rally-goers and counter-protesters. After the governor of Virginia issued a state of emergency and called in the National Guard, a car plowed into a group of counter-demonstrators, causing an unknown number of injuries.
Duke has been something of a sore spot for Trump for a while now due to then-candidate Trump not immediately repudiating the former KKK leader’s support for him. Trump did eventually denounce Duke, but it hasn’t stopped the white supremacist from offering up his support to the president.
