Louisiana Judge Faces Calls to Resign Following Video of Her Making Racist Remarks

A Louisiana judge has been facing calls to resign after a video surfaced that shows her making racist remarks.

The video was taken following a failed burglary attempt at her home over the weekend, confirmed Judge Michelle Odinet. The video was reportedly leaked to local media by an unknown source. While watching the footage from the attempted robbery, Odinet, a City Court judge, said, “We have a n*gger. It’s a n*gger, like a roach.”

Odinet’s lawyer, Dane Ciolino, told ABC News that her client is “humiliated, embarrassed, and sorry for what she’s done and for the trouble she’s caused to everyone in the community.”

“She is taking, effective immediately, an unpaid leave of absence from the bench,” he continued. “She hasn’t made any longer-term decisions than that, but will in the next several weeks.”

Since the video became public, elected officials have called for her resignation.

“Quite frankly, there’s no place for that kind of language, especially among members of the judiciary who have the most important role in administering justice in our state,” said Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, according to The Daily Advertiser.

“I am disgusted and appalled by the recent reports involving a local judge,” Lafayette Mayor-President Josh Guillory told ABC News. “This type of language is hurtful, divisive, and unacceptable. The fairness and objectivity of our courts are the foundation of our legal system. It is my hope that the judge will do what is best to help the community heal and move forward.”

“This insensitivity is dangerous as she oversees a vast amount of cases in her Judiciary that include African Americans who appear before her in court, in the city of Lafayette,” Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus chairman state Rep. Edward James, told ABC News. “A sitting judge should not use any racial slurs or show bias against any specific group of individuals.”
