‘Can’t Even Say It’s a Press Conference’ MSNBC Host Corrects Description of Trump’s Post-Verdict ‘Ramble’ After Network Cuts Away
MSNBC’s José Díaz-Balart declined to describe a speech before cameras by Donald Trump as a “press conference” on Friday, dismissing it as a campaign event after the network cut away early to offer fact checks of the former president.
“Donald Trump was all over the place at the start of this press conference and throughout really. It would seem like stream of consciousness a little bit. He talked about coming across the border, he talked about how they want to take away your cars. That’s a direct quote,” MSNBC anchor Ana Cabrera said when describing Trump’s speech moments after MSNBC dumped out of the event.
Trump set up the press conference following his conviction on more than 30 felony counts at his Manhattan hush money trial. In his talk, the former president echoed his past statements, attacking Judge Juan Merchan, Manhattan Attorney General Alvin Bragg, and more.
MSNBC offered multiple fact checks of Trump, including his declaration at one point that he could be facing more than 120 years behind bars. Trump’s sentencing is scheduled for July 11.
MSNBC legal analyst and former Manhattan Asst. District Attorney Catherine Christian noted that if Trump were given actual jail sentences for each of his convictions, they would run concurrently, meaning they would never touch 120 years.
After Cabrera described the Trump event as a “press conference,” Díaz-Balart jumped in.
“By the way, Ana, we can’t even say it’s a press conference,” he said to which his co-host quickly agreed.
“So far it’s been …” Díaz-Balart.
“A ramble,” MSNBC political analyst Tim Miller offered, calling Trump’s speech “pretty incoherent.”
“Yeah, but starting, as Ana said, from a political perspective. This is a political speech,” Díaz-Balart.
