‘Where Is This Coming From?’ MSNBC’s José Díaz-Balart Perplexed After John Kasich Suggests Biden Won’t Be Dem Nominee
John Kasich caught MSNBC’s José Díaz-Balart by surprise on Friday when he suggested President Joe Biden might not be the Democratic Party’s nominee in November despite having already endorsed him.
Kasich, the former Ohio Republican governor, argued Biden’s “not very good” public appearances combined with concerns about inflation could somehow knock him off the top of the Democratic Party’s ticket.
“The fact that the economy is not turning, the fact that people are saying it’s a terrible economy for them, the fact that they’ve said they don’t have any confidence Joe Biden can fix it, his public appearances have not been very good, and now they’ve agreed to two debates, which is as out there as you can get,” Kasich, now a political analyst, said. “I’m starting to wonder — I’ve talked to a lot of Democrats, they didn’t tell me this — but I’m starting to wonder that there’s a real possibility that Joe Biden will not be the Democrat nominee.”
“Governor, where is this coming from?” a shocked Díaz-Balart asked.
Kasich said he was basing his theory merely on conversations he’s had with Democrats and bad polling, like a recent New York Times/Siena College survey, showing Donald Trump leading Biden in five swing states.
“It comes from the fact that I’ve talked to a lot of people, and I’ve seen what these numbers are like, Jose,” Kasich said.
The former governor said he’s not sure how the upcoming debates will go for Biden, again saying the president’s public appearances “just aren’t working.” Biden and Trump have agreed to a June 27 debate to air on CNN and a September 10 debate to air on ABC.
“I don’t know how that’s going to go, and I’m just beginning to wonder,” he said.
A skeptical Díaz-Balart offered, “Anything can happen.”
“Your opinion is an important one. The important thing is to listen to everyone’s concepts, opinion, and thoughts,” the MSNBC anchor said before quickly dropping the subject raised by Kasich.
