Donald Trump took to Truth Social to say it was his “great honor” to get shot for democracy, referring to an attempted assassination attempt earlier this month in Butler, Pennsylvania.

In a short message on Tuesday, the former president claimed the administration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris did not “properly protect” him.

“The Biden/Harris Administration did not properly protect me, and I was forced to take a bullet for Democracy. IT WAS MY GREAT HONOR TO DO SO!” Trump wrote.

The former president’s statement dropped the same day that Kimberly Cheatle announced she was resigning as director of the Secret Service following an tense day testifying before the House Oversight Committee about the assassination attempt.

The Associated Press first reported on Tuesday that Cheatle resigned in an email to staff.

“I take full responsibility for the security lapse,” Cheatle reportedly wrote. “In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision to step down as your director.”

Trump was grazed in the ear and a rally goer was fatally shot. The 20-year-old shooter Thomas Crooks was also killed after getting off multiple rounds.

Cheatle went through tense exchanges on Monday with both Republican and Democratic lawmakers who questioned apparent security lapses and the need for 60 days to release a full report.
