Obama Speechwriter Says Biden Shouldn’t Be Campaigning for Kamala Harris Because He’s Become a Liability: ‘His Legacy Is Obviously At Stake’
Pod Save America co-host Jon Favreau recommended President Joe Biden stay off the campaign trail in the final days of the election, suggesting he’s become too much of a liability for Vice President Kamala Harris.
Favreau joined CNN’s Jake Tapper on The Lead on Friday to discuss the final stretch of the election and Tapper referenced Biden’s controversial “garbage” comment about Trump’s Madison Square Garden event, asking if the president has become “too much of a risk” to have stumping for his own vice president.
Biden found himself facing backlash after he appeared to call Trump supporters “garbage” over a comment made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at the MSG rally. Hinchcliffe jokingly referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage.” Biden condemned the comment and in the original transcript of his talk, he referred to Trump “supporters” as “garbage.” As Tapper reported, this was later changed to Trump “supporter’s” to clarify Biden was only referring to Hinchcliffe and his rhetoric.
Favreau still argued the moment proves Biden can best protect his legacy by keeping silent for the next few days.
“If I was Joe Biden and I knew — look, his legacy obviously is at stake in this election and he’s president of the United States. He’s got a lot of work to do as president. I would look at the numbers, I would look at the race and say, I’m going to focus on being president over the next couple of days and that’s probably the best thing he can do not just for the Harris campaign, but himself and his legacy too,” Favreau, a speechwriter for former President Barack Obama, said.
The fallout from Biden’s comment, he added, actually gave Harris an “opportunity” to distance herself from him and stand on her own for voters.
“I actually think it was an opportunity for her that she took to separate herself a little bit from Joe Biden, which she has been — that’s been one of her big challenges and I think now she can say in these final couple days, ‘look, I am out here trying to fight for every vote and trying to bring people together and sort of end the division in this country and Donald Trump is not and we are going to turn the page on all of that in a couple days,'” he said.
