‘Oy! That’s All I Can Say — Oy!’ CNN’s Jake Tapper Goes Off On Trump For ‘Lashing Out At Jews Who Don’t Support Him’

CNN anchor Jake Tapper went off on former President Donald Trump in an extended segment on Trump’s remarks “lashing out at Jews who don’t support him,” exclaiming at the end “Oy! That’s all I can say— Oy!’

Trump is under fire for comments he made in an interview with Sebastian Gorka Monday.

“Any Jewish person that votes for Democrats hates their religion. They hate everything about Israel and they should be ashamed of themselves because Israel will be destroyed,” Trump said.

The remarks have been widely criticized as playing to anti-Semitic tropes.

On Tuesday’s edition of CNN’s The Lead, Tapper led off his show with a scathing introduction blasting “another shocker for Donald Trump,” and after a lengthy panel discussion with David Frum and Bill Kristol, signed off with an exasperated exclamation.

TAPPER: And leading this hour, another shocker from Donald Trump, showing nothing, not even one’s faith is off limits in 2024. If you’re an American Jew who votes for Democrats, Donald Trump says, you hate your own religion, and you hate Israel, and you should be ashamed of yourself.

We should note, American Jews vote Democratic roughly 70 percent of the time. So, that’s a lot of Jews that Donald Trump just attacked.

Monday, former Trump White House aide Sebastian Gorka asked Trump about criticism. The prominent Democrats, including President Biden and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, have aimed at Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.

JAKE TAPPER: It’s a fairly shocking thing for a presidential candidate to say about any religious minority. But about Jews at this time of rising anti-semitism in the United States, it is certainly noteworthy. This is not the first time he is lashed out at Jews who don’t support him. Just last year around the High Holy Days for Jews, Trump shared a social media image that said liberal Jews who didn’t support him, quote, “voted to destroy America and Israel.” But that was a repost on Instagram or read truth or whatever.

The White House was quick to respond to Trump’s latest comments saying, quote, “As antisemitic crimes and acts of hate have increased across the world, among them the deadliest attack committed against the Jewish people since the Holocaust. Leaders have an obligation to call hate what it is and bring Americans together against it. There is no justification for spreading toxic false stereotypes that threaten fellow citizens. None,” unquote.

That was putting it nicely compared to what the Biden campaign had to say, which was, quote, “The only person who should be ashamed here is Donald Trump. Donald Trump openly demeans Jewish Americans and reportedly thinks Adolf Hitler,” quote, “did some good things.” That last bit is a reference to comments Trump made in private to his then Chief of Staff retired General John Kelly according to CNNs own Jim Sciutto.

After some reporting from Kristen Holmes on the Trumpworld reaction to the uproar, Tapper spoke to Frum and Kristol, who are prominent Jews like Tapper, but who are also lifelong Republicans. All denounced Trump’s comments, and Tapper finished the segment by saying “Oy! That’s all I can say— Oy!”
