CNN’s Smerconish Offers Mixed Review of Kamala Harris’s Big Interview: ‘Headline Today Is There Is No Headline’

CNN’s Michael Smerconish offered a very mixed review of Vice President Kamala Harris’s interview with his network, saying in the end “the headline today is that there is no headline.”

Smerconish joined Manu Raju on CNN This Morning on Friday and reviewed Harris’s sit-down with Dana Bash the night prior. It was Harris’s first major interview since moving to the top of the Democratic Party ticket.

Smerconish said Harris avoided any major “stumbles,” but also chalked the interview up to a “Rorschach test” that did not provide enough of anything to be of any real value except to partisans who have already made up their minds.

“I think the headline today is that there is no headline, right? There was really no news made from the event other than it occurred after her being the Democratic candidate for thereabout a month. She achieved her purpose which is that the two of us right now are not discussing any viral video. There was not a stumble anyone was pointing to today. That’s a good thing for her,” he said.

The CNN host argued Harris did not “resolve” concerns about her “ability to think on her feet.”

“Did she resolve questions about her ability to think in real time on her feet, unscripted? I don’t think entirely that she did. Bottom line is, it’s a Rorschach test and partisans are going to look at it and find in it whatever they want to find in it,” he said.

Smerconish oddly criticized Harris’s overall media strategy, saying she has “not been accessible” to the degree she should be to journalists and voters, but then he recommended she stay the course as it’s working in her favor.

“Continue to do what you’re doing because it appears to be working for her, but at some point I think she’s got an obligation to take more questions in real time,” he said.
