Republican Senator Calls U.S. Military ‘A Disaster’ and Says ‘We Couldn’t Beat Anybody Right Now’
Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) trashed the U.S. military, claiming the fighting force is incapable of winning a war in its current state.
Tuberville, who will be part of the Senate’s new Republican majority come January, appeared on Monday’s edition of The Ingraham Angle on Fox News, where Laura Ingraham asked the senator his position on aid to Ukraine. Many congressional Republicans have opposed assistance to the country, which Russia invaded in February 2022.
“I think we’ve sent them over $200 billion,” she said. “It looks like things are not going well for Ukraine now, which is very sad. And so many people have died in this conflict on both sides. It’s been horrific. But that’s a sticking point for the more establishment members of the Senate, is it not?”
“Exactly,” Tuberville replied. “They don’t want to be proven wrong. We’ve had so many people on the Democrat and Republican side that’s voted for all the money to go there. I’ve not voted for a dime. They can’t win, Laura. I didn’t want to get these people killed. They can’t win. They’re undermanned, they’re understaffed.”
The senator then predicted that President-Elect Donald Trump is “going to get them out of this,” but “I don’t know what he’s gonna have to give up to get them out of it.”
Tuberville then insisted that the U.S. military needs to be shored up.
“We need to build our military up,” he continued. “Our military right now, Laura, is a disaster. Absolute disaster. We couldn’t beat anybody right now. We’ve got some good people in the military. But the structure of it, the things that we’ve done, the Democrats have destroyed it.”
Tuberville, who did not serve in the military, has repeatedly claimed that there’s “nobody more military than me.”
Last year, he singlehandedly held up hundreds of nominations to the Department of Defense, which has a budget larger than the military budgets of the next nine countries combined.
