Shepard Smith Returns to Live News

Former Fox News anchor Shepard Smith is stepping back into the live news spotlight, joining Amazon’s election night coverage on November 5.

Smith will report from Vice President Kamala Harris’s election night headquarters, marking his first live news appearance since his 2022 departure from CNBC.

The project is headlined by another former news giant, Brian Williams, who is helming the election night coverage on Amazon Prime. Amazon’s decision to launch into the election night landscape is a bold step into territory traditionally dominated by cable and network news.

Speaking with the Associated Press, Williams said that the special represents “the first — if you’ll forgive the phrase — new product introduction in the election night space since color television.”

Assembling a team of seasoned journalists, Amazon aims to provide an election night experience distinct from legacy news networks. Williams, working alongside executive producer Jonathan Wald, has spent 60 days creating what he describes as “a temporary, one-night news division” that will operate out of an MGM soundstage in Los Angeles.

The broadcast is set to begin at 5 p.m. Eastern, with Amazon relying on data from the Associated Press and Reuters to keep viewers updated.
