Gavin Newsom Flames ‘Pathetically Weak’ Congressional Republicans: ‘Just Completely Rolling Over’ for Trump

California Governor Gavin Newsom lit up Republican lawmakers as they appear to be on the verge of abiding by Donald Trump’s wish to stop negotiations on immigration and the border.

In a private meeting this week, Sen. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told colleagues that regarding those talks, “Politics on this have changed.” He cited comments by the former president telling GOP lawmakers they should not pass an immigration bill. Trump wants the border as a campaign issue to use against President Joe Biden.

Trump also posted his feelings last week on Truth Social, stating, “I do not think we should do a Border Deal, at all, unless we get EVERYTHING needed to shut down the INVASION… Also, I have no doubt that our wonderful Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, will only make a deal that is PERFECT ON THE BORDER.”

Newsom weighed in during part of an interview that aired on Thursday’s Alex Wagner Tonight on MSNBC.

“Mitch McConnell, I thought that was shameful what was reported,” the governor said. “Just completely rolling over and capitulating. Don’t even get me started with the weakness of the current speaker of the House. I mean, they don’t want a deal. Period… It says everything you need to know about the fraud that they’re perpetuating on the issue of the border.”

The governor recalled the failed 2013 bipartisan negotiations on immigration led by the ill-fated “Gang of Eight.”

“I’m old enough to remember them,” Alex Wagner cracked.

“And ever since there, they just walk away,” he said. “They run away.”

He continued:

And again, I say this is a border state governor. No one has to introduce me to this issue. We’ve the largest port in the Western Hemisphere in the state of California. We live this. And I think it is a disgrace what the Republican Party’s doing, what Donald Trump is doing. And this is hidden in plain sight. He sent out a tweet or some truth whatever saying, “Kill it.”

And these guys are so weak. How emb– it’s just so pathetically weak, this Republican Party. And the new speaker said “Oh yes, sir. What else would you like us to do? We don’t care about America. We don’t care about our freedoms and liberties. We care about politics exclusively at the expense of the American people. It’s all we care about is winning for winning’s sake.” That is shameful.
