House Democrat Tells MSNBC SCOTUS Abortion Pill Decision ‘Doesn’t Mean Women of America Are Free’

Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) told MSNBC on Thursday that the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision to preserve access to a hotly-debated abortion pill “doesn’t mean the women of America are free.”

Lofgren joined MSNBC’s Ana Cabrera shortly after the Supreme Court’s 9-0 decision in which they preserved access to the abortion pill mifepristone. The decision overturned a federal appeals court ruling that would have barred the pill being sent in the mail.

Lofgren called the case “bizarre” and wondered why the Supreme Court even got involved.

“I’m kind of wondering, why did they take this made up case to begin with? This was made up case for an agenda and it was bizarre that they took it. Obviously it was a hot potato and now they’ve gotten rid of it but it doesn’t mean that the women of America are free,” she said.

Lofgren said women continue to face major “risk” from the federal government, arguing that the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade eliminated the right to privacy for women. She also blasted Donald Trump for celebrating the Roe v. Wade decision.

“We have a lot of risk right now, and that’s not over,” she said.

Lofgren argued the fact that the Supreme Court did not weigh in on the merits of the abortion pill case might be an indication they realized it was a “mistake” to take up the case at all. The lawmaker said Democrats in the House are continuing to work to codify rights to abortion and contraceptives, but Republicans “control the agenda.”

“The Republicans control the agenda and they are on the side of the federal government taking over women’s healthcare,” she said.
