Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) called for New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) to step down on Wednesday.

In a statement to The New York Times — as well as a post to Twitter/X — AOC stated: “The flood of resignations and vacancies are threatening gov function. Nonstop investigations will make it impossible to recruit and retain a qualified administration.” She is the first high-profile Democrat to call for Adams’s resignation.

Several members of Adams’s administration as well as people connected to it have stepped down amid several investigations into the conduct at City Hall. Currently, the FBI is conducting four different investigations into Adams and city officials including possible corruption and bribery and quid pro quo dealings with Turkey.

Several officials including Adams have had their homes raided by FBI agents and had their cell phones seized. Earlier this month, NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban resigned from his position after his home was raided, as well as his twin brother James Caban. The latter brother, a nightclub owner and former police officer, was seen as a “fixer” for Adams’s administration, tasked with “smoothing things over between police and popular establishments around noise complaints and other violations.”
