CNN Analyst Says Biden ‘Might as Well Just Embrace’ Referring to Trump Supporters ‘Garbage’
CNN’s Mark Preston argued that President Joe Biden should be embracing his “garbage” comment about former Donald Trump’s supporters rather than trying to clean up the message amid blowback.
Biden sparked outrage among conservatives after referring to Trump supporters as “garbage” while expressing his displeasure with a joke told at Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally. At the event, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe set off a firestorm of controversy on his own after referring to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage.” Trump and his campaign quickly distanced themselves from the joke and comedian.
“The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters– his– his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American. It’s totally contrary to everything we’ve done, everything we’ve been,” Biden said from the White House.
He later attempted to clarify in an X post.
“His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I meant to say,” the president wrote.
Preston argued on Wednesday’s CNN This Morning that Biden running away from the comment is worse for him and the Democrats.
“I’m of the mindset that if you say it, you might as well just embrace it, and I do think that that’s a problem for Democrats,” Preston said.
“We’re going to ask our strategist over here in a second,” a chuckling Kasie Hunt responded, surprised by Preston’s analysis.
The senior political analyst argued that it’s “not a good look” trying to clean up the comment to please critics.
“I do think if he said, listen, yeah, I do mean all those racist supporters of Donald Trump, yeah, I do think that they’re terrible. I think that people would look at the Democratic Party a little bit different,” Preston said. “I do think that the Democratic Party, in general, doesn’t look like they are strong enough, and they will always back off of things. And I think that when Joe Biden backs off of saying what he really believes, I don’t think that’s a good look.”
