NBC Rules Analyst Terry McAulay Baffled By Ref’s Decision to Overrule Seemingly Obvious TD on Sunday Night Football

NBC Rules analyst Terry McAulay criticized the referees for a questionable call during the Sunday Night Football game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

With less than four minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Jaguars found themselves down 23-7. The team drove the ball deep in Ravens territory before quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw the ball to receiver Calvin Ridley in the back of the end zone. Although it appeared to be a catch as it happened live, it was ruled incomplete.

Jags coach Doug Pederson then decided to challenge the play. Replays from several angles showed Ridley juggling the ball before bringing it into his chest. He appeared to put his right knee down before his left foot slid out of bounds. Per NFL rules, one knee down counts as two feet down.

When McAulay was brought in to give his opinion, he felt it was clearly a catch.

“Clearly inbounds,” the former ref said. “I believe he gains complete control. Knee down, touchdown.”

NcAulay reaffirmed that he felt it was “clear and obvious” that the ruling should be overturned to a touchdown. When it wasn’t, he was perplexed.

“I gotta tell you guys, I completely disagree with that,” McAulay said after the ruling was announced. “I mean, [in] that shot we just showed you, he has complete control, knee down, the foot’s not out of bounds yet. I completely disagree with the ‘stands’ ruling on this one.”
