‘Calling the Bluff’: CNN Legal Analyst Credits Jack Smith ‘Aggressive’ Push to Beat Trump’s Stall Tactics By Filing Appeal to SCOTUS
CNN legal analyst Elliot Williams applauded Special Counsel Jack Smith for his legal maneuvering by asking the Supreme Court to settle Donald Trump’s claim to immunity from prosecution.
Williams joined Pamela Brown, Paula Reid, and Kristen Holmes on Monday to discuss the news that Smith is asking the Supreme Court to decide whether or not the former president can be prosecuted for his allegedly illegal schemes to overturn his 2020 election defeat.
The Associated Press reports that “Smith is attempting to bypass the appeals court. The request filed Monday for the Supreme Court to take up the matter directly reflects Smith’s desire to keep the trial, currently set for March 4, on track and to prevent any delays that could push back the case until after next year’s presidential election.”
As the CNN News Central panel discussed the timeline of the 2020 election case, Holmes spoke of how the Trump campaign is “going to try to do every thing they possibly can to push this past the election because they think that Donald Trump can win the election, and he is not in trial every single day.” To that point, Holmes said that Smith’s team “called them on their game” by undermining the Trump team’s hopes of dragging the case out in appeals court.
Williams agreed to the point of this “gamesmanship” by outlining how Trump could’ve prolonged the case’s progression from the Court of Appeals to the Supreme Court.
“Like [Holmes] said, it’s calling the bluff,” Williams said. “Now, again, the Supreme Court does not have to agree to it, as we know. But this was a very aggressive step by the prosecutors to move this case along.”
