According to CNN sources, former President Donald Trump‘s legal team is warning him that indictments may be on the way for the January 6 attack — but Trump is heavily skeptical.
The investigations into the plot to overturn the election have been heating up all summer. Attorney General Merrick Garland can’t seem to go anywhere these days without being asked about Trump and January 6, and has frequently offered tantalizing comments about the investigations. And every day seems to bring one or two more scoops related to the case — including Thursday evening.
In an exclusive CNN report — authored by Katelyn Polantz, Kara Scannell, Gabby Orr, and Kristen Holmes — sources offer up some intriguing new details about the investigation.
One such detail is that the Justice Department has been in direct contact with Team Trump to wrangle about privilege claims.
The other is that Trump’s lawyers have been warning him of the very real possibility of indictments, and that Trump “has expressed a heavy dose of skepticism that he will be indicted” — or at least, that’s what he’s projecting:
Trump’s legal defense team has warned him that indictments are possible, sources tell CNN.
Some members of Trump’s legal team have discussed his potential defense strategies on at least two occasions in recent months, according to two sources familiar with the matter, as they brace for new developments in the Justice Department probe and a separate investigation by Georgia officials into his potentially criminal meddling in the state’s 2020 election results. Rolling Stone previously reported that Trump had been briefed.
Trump has grilled his attorneys on whether they actually believe he will face formal charges, sources said. Yet the former President has expressed a heavy dose of skepticism that he will be indicted, one of the sources familiar with the matter said.
Another source close to the former President told CNN that Trump also has posed questions about a potential indictment to members of his inner circle, some of whom believe the President is concerned about the possibility of federal charges.
But one person close to Trump said he is noticeably more engaged when he is chatting with friends and advisers about the 2022 midterms and his possible presidential campaign in 2024 than he has been during briefings on legal strategy.
People do have a tendency to hear what they want to hear where this investigation is concerned, but for what it’s worth, New York Times correspondent and noted “Trump Whisperer” Maggie Haberman has been reporting that Trump is worried about the investigations.
