Dem Strategist Argues on NewsNation Replacing Biden with Gavin Newsom ‘Totally Feasible’ Months Out From Election

Democratic strategist Mychal Wilson told NewsNation it’s “totally feasible” to replace President Joe Biden, and he believes that replacement should be California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D).

Wilson joined NewsNation’s Adrienne Bankert on Sunday along with Republican strategist Sheryl Adams to discuss the ongoing fallout from Biden and Donald Trump’s CNN debate last week. Bankert noted the New York Times, Atlanta Journal Constitution, and Chicago Tribune have all called for the president to step aside from the election following his performance.

“It’s totally feasible. We have the convention coming up and it’s up to the DNC and how the delegates work and everything,” Wilson said about replacing Biden on the Democratic ticket for November.

He argued Vice President Kamala Harris should remain second on the ticket.

“I think that it lies within Joe Biden himself… if he wants to save democracy, then personally, I think he should step aside, and I think the perfect person to fill his seat would be someone like Gavin Newsom and still have Ms. Harris run as the VP,” he said.

Wilson also threw out Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) as a potential replacement, acknowledging Newsom’s polices on crime in California have had “adverse” effects.

“Some of his policies have had an adverse effect. I mean, when you’re talking about crime, I lived in Los Angeles — prisoners getting out of prison before they should…there’s an issue with that,” he said.

Adams called Newsom the “absolutely” wrong choice for the country but agreed Biden needed to be replaced.

“I think it would be Gavin Newsom because he’s very charming, he’s 56-years-old, and he could have a great run here,” Wilson said.

Newsom has shot down the possibility of replacing Biden in the past and he threw his weight behind the president following last week’s debate.

“You don’t turn your back because of one bad performance,” Newsom said. “What kind of party does that?”
