Ukraine launched US-made long-range ATACMS missiles into Russian territory for the first time on Tuesday, following President Joe Biden’s decision to lift restrictions on their use.
Senior U.S. and Ukrainian officials confirmed that the missiles were used when speaking with the New York Times under condition of anonymity.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence first reported the attack, stating that its air defense systems intercepted five out of six missiles over the Bryansk region.
Videos circulated on Telegram, capturing a missile’s distinctive smoke trail cutting through the atmosphere. The targeted site, reportedly an ammunition depot, was left damaged.
Ukraine’s General Staff claimed responsibility for the operation: “The destruction of ammunition depots will continue for the army of the Russian occupiers in order to stop the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.”
The news comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin updated the nation’s nuclear doctrine to lower the bar for a nuclear response, adding that any conventional attack on Russia by a non-nuclear armed nation if backed by a nuclear-armed nation, will be considered joint aggression.
The deployment of ATACMS—missiles boasting a range of up to 190 miles—signals a major boost to Ukraine’s long-range strike capabilities to target assets inside Russian territory.
This is a developing story.
