Boris Johnson Warns Some Republicans Have ‘Weird Homoerotic Fascination’ With Russia’s Vladimir Putin
Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson expressed concerns over the influence of some advisors on President-elect Donald Trump’s future foreign policy, warning that some aides that have the “president’s ear” have a “weird homoerotic fascination” with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.
Speaking at Fortune’s Global Forum conference on Monday, the long-time Trump ally observed that some “factions within the Republican Party… think [Putin is] an all-around stand-up guy, and they love his manly Christianity.”
He added: “It’s complete nonsense. He’s a tyrant and a kleptocrat and a murderer and a very, very dangerous and bad man.”
He further criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s rhetoric, saying, “There’s a lot of dangerous, poisonous, pernicious talk at the moment.”
Johnson referred to Trump’s bold promise to negotiate a peace deal within “24 hours” of retaking office, a move he warned could result in a deal “not in the interests of freedom and democracy.”
The ex-prime minister underscored the risks of a fast-tracked peace deal: “I’m absolutely convinced that it would be a disaster for the world if Ukraine were to go down.”
Expressing optimism that Trump would define his own agenda, Johnson concluded: “I nonetheless cling to my memory of Trump when he was in office, where actually he was pretty tough on Putin. So look, I’m just putting it out there, if anybody’s in touch with the president-elect, here is a golden opportunity to show that the previous administration has been weak because it has not given the Ukrainians provisions they need.”
