Mexican President Throws Cold Water on Trump’s Claim She Agreed To Do What He Demanded

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum cast doubt on comments President-elect Donald Trump made regarding a phone call the two leaders had.

On Monday, Trump threatened to impose 25% tariffs on all imports from Mexico and Canada “until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!”

Then on Wednesday, the president-elect claimed he “had a wonderful conversation with” Sheinbaum,” stating, “She has agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border.”

In a subsequent post, Trump said, “Mexico will stop people from going to our Southern Border, effective immediately. THIS WILL GO A LONG WAY TOWARD STOPPING THE ILLEGAL INVASION OF THE USA. Thank you!!!”

Just hours later, Sheinbaum tweeted her own recollection of the call in Spanish. A Google translation read in part on CNN states:

In our conversation with President Trump, I explained to him the comprehensive strategy that Mexico has followed to address the migration phenomenon, respecting human rights. Thanks to this, migrants and caravans are assisted before they reach the border. We reiterate that Mexico’s position is not to close borders but to build bridges between governments and between peoples.

The president-elect’s comments on Wednesday night puzzled longtime Trump beat reporter Maggie Haberman, who noted he has deployed this kind of strategy with world leaders before.

“I have no idea what that actually means,” she said. “He has made statements like that before when he was president, and it didn’t actually amount to the closure of a border. You know, it comes a day after he made some very aggressive tariff threat against Mexico and Canada. And so, I think that’s probably not a coincidence, although who knows?”
