Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) ridiculed an effort to draft former President Donald Trump as House speaker on Thursday, tweeting, “We’ve seen a Trump rally at the Capitol already.”

In a Twitter post on Thursday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) wrote, “If Trump becomes Speaker of the House, the House chamber will be like a Trump rally everyday!! [sic] It would be the House of MAGA!!!”

Schumer, less enthusiastic about the idea, responded with a reference to the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riots: “No thanks, we’re good. We’ve seen a Trump rally at the Capitol already.”

Several House Republicans, including Greene and Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX), have expressed support for a Trump speakership following the ousting of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), and Trump is apparently “open” to the idea, according to Fox News host Sean Hannity.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) has also expressed support for a potential Trump speakership, despite currently being a frontrunner for the position himself. Jordan told Hannity that while he would prefer Trump to focus on the 2024 presidential election, the former president would “be great” as House speaker.

On Wednesday, Trump shared a series of Truth Social posts pitching him as speaker and posted an edited photo of himself holding the speaker’s gavel — seemingly confirming his interest in the role.
