Israel has bombed Iran, multiple news outlets reported on Friday night, as several explosions were heard in and near the capital of Tehran.
Trey Yingst of Fox News was the first reporter for a major U.S. cable news to report the strikes on air.
“It appears at this moment that the Israeli attack against Iran is ongoing,” he said while reporting from Israel. Yingst said he spoke with a senior Israeli official about the attack.
“This strike, according to this senior official, was meant to send a message of deterrence to the Iranian regime and there was communication with the Americans beforehand as the region waits to see what will come next,” he said. “But again, the latest information that we have, multiple explosions have been reported in and around the Iranian capital of Tehran, as well as in the northern part of Iran.”
Israel has expanded its offensive in recent weeks by invading southern Lebanon to attack Hezbollah, an Iranian proxy in the region. The incursion came about a year after Israel invaded Gaza after Hamas launched the Oct. 7 terror attacks inside Israel last year.
It is unclear what if any role the United States played in the attacks.
Despite the aforementioned senior official’s comment that the strikes are “a message of deterrence,” other Israeli and U.S. officials told Axios that they anticipate Iran will respond militarily.
“U.S. and Israeli officials believe Iran will respond militarily, but hope it will be limited and allow the two adversaries to break the tit-for-tat cycle,” Axios reported.
Iran launched a slew of missiles toward Israel earlier this month that were largely thwarted by Israel’s Iron Dome. In April, Israel bombed the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, killing several senior officials. Israel also carried out an airstrike in Tehran in July, killing Hamas official Ismail Haniyeh.
This is a developing story.
