Podcaster and former presidential speechwriter Jon Lovett can barely believe it himself, but it’s happening — he’s going to be a contestant on the upcoming season of CBS’s Survivor.
The co-host of Pod Save America and host of Lovett or Leave It posted a video on Twitter/X on Thursday to introduce himself as a Survivor contestant who is “best in small doses” while explaining how weird it was that he was doing that:
When Pod Save America listeners and Lovett or Leave It listeners discover that the reason I was gone for five weeks is to be on Survivor, they’re going to think that that is bananas. But there is something really exciting about putting that aside to focus on this game where everybody starts at zero and it’ll be okay. Once I get talking, you’ll see — it’s worse for me than it is for you! I’m just an odd person.
Can’t believe I actually went on @survivorcbs and then you all see it in 2 weeks. 9/18: pic.twitter.com/k1SPjNdxR3

He also drew parallels between his speechwriting work (for former President Barack Obama) and politics and the cutthroat nature of reality TV:
Being a speechwriter is about figuring out the best way to convince a bunch of people to either come along with you, or agree with you, or support you. I think that’s a lot of what Survivor is. Final Tribal, it’s a political campaign. It’s an election, and it is very fun to think about.
Lovett makes his debut on Survivor on September 18.
