Pod Save America hosts and former Barack Obama aides Jon Favreau and Dan Pfeiffer torched attacks on Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s (D) military record, with Pfeiffer calling them “total bullshit,” but also “totally unsurprising.”

Republicans, including vice presidential nominee JD Vance, an Iraq War veteran, have criticized Walz’s military record, including the fact that he retired after 24 years in the National Guard shortly before his unit was deployed to Iraq in 2005.

“I wonder, Tim Walz, when were you ever in war?” Vance said recently at a Michigan campaign rally, adding, “I’d be ashamed if I was him and I lied about my military service like he did.”

Vance accused Walz of “stolen valor” in reference to Walz saying he carried “weapons of war” in a war in a campaign video with Vice President Kamala Harris. Walz was deployed to Italy as part of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2003.

“It’s disgusting and despicable and totally unsurprising from the Trump people running [Donald Trump’s] campaign. It’s complete and total bullshit,” Pfeiffer said about attacks on Walz’s military service.

Pfeiffer noted that Walz filed to run for Congress weeks before there were orders for his unit to deploy. He also later blasted another accusation that Walz had “inflated” his rank. Walz achieved the rank of Command Sergeant Major while in the National Guard, but upon retirement he was reduced in rank because he had not held that promotion for enough time or completed Army Sergeants Major Academy coursework.

“There’s no evidence he ran for Congress to avoid going to Iraq. It’s complete bullshit!” Pfeiffer said.

“He served 24 years in the Guard! You only had to serve 20 to get retirement and he served 24 years. He was also deployed during the war in Afghanistan,” Favreau added. “During Operation Enduring Freedom, he was stationed in Italy at the time.”

Favreau also argued the carrying “weapons of war” line comes down to splitting hairs.

“They attacked him for saying — in an ad he was talking about an assault weapons ban and he was saying, ‘I carried weapons of war in a war,’ and so they’re attacking him on that, but, you know, as the campaign said, he has carried, fired, and trained others to use weapons of war innumerable times,” he said.

“It’s totally absurd,” Pfeiffer agreed, adding focusing on Walz’s two decades in the military as a line of attack is “not a particularly constructive use” of time for Trump’s campaign.
