Jon Stewart Accuses Biden of ‘Trumpian’ Mafia-Style Refusal to Discuss Criticisms
Comedian Jon Stewart criticized President Joe Biden of failing to “inspire any confidence” in his administration-wide “Trumpian” shutdown of those who raised questions about his ability to run for re-election amid concerns about his mental fitness carry the campaign – comparing it to a mafia-style code of silence.
Stewart made the remarks on his Weekly Show podcast, which featured Pod Save America hosts Jon Favreau and Tommy Vietor, both former Obama-Biden staffers, as well as CNN political commentator Bakari Sellers, and looked closely at Biden’s steadfast refusal to consider stepping down as the Democratic nominee for the upcoming November election.
The Biden-Harris campaign recently lashed out at “self-important podcasters” in a perceived jab at Favreau and Vietor.
On the show Stewart, while not explicitly calling for Biden to step down, pressed the administration to be open to the conversation.
Stewart said: “It would be better if Joe Biden came out and said, ‘Look, I understand where I’m at in my lifespan and cycle and what I do. Here’s how this government works,’ rather than coming out and becoming Trumpian and saying, ‘You think someone else could hold NATO together? They could never. Only God can tell me to get out of the race.’”
He continued: “Nothing that’s been done inspires any confidence, other than the fatalism of, ‘It is what it is, and this is what we’re stuck with.’”
Instead, he said, the administration’s approach was like “omertá” – a Sicilian mafia code of honor – in that it aimed to stifle any constructive dialogue around the issue.
