WATCH: Missouri Attorney Goes Viral Following Heartfelt Explanation of Why He Supports His Transgender Daughter
Brandon Boulware, a Kansas City attorney and father of four, spoke out against the discrimination of transgender youth this month — going viral for his heartfelt and personal testimony.
Boulware, whose daughter is transgender, testified against a state proposal that would prohibit transgender athletes from women’s sports earlier this month, during which he asked Missouri representatives to end transgender youth discrimination.

“I forced my daughter to wear boy clothes, get short haircuts and play on boy sports teams,” Boulware said in the testimony. “Why did I do this? To protect my child.”
Boulware then admitted he also did it to protect himself, adding, “I wanted to avoid those inevitable questions as to why my child did not look and act like a boy.”
He revealed that his position on his daughter’s gender identity shifted when she asked him if she could play with her friends if she changed into boys’ clothes.
“My daughter was equating being good with being someone else,” he said. “I was teaching her to deny who she is. On that day, my wife and I stopped silencing our child’s spirit.”
“Let them have their childhoods,” he added. “Let them be who they are.”
Miami Heat great Dwyane Wade, who is also the parent of a transgender daughter, reposted the video to his Instagram account, thanking Boulware for using his platform to share his family’s story:

“I vote AGAINST this legislation! I don’t know Brandon Boulware at all but I do know we have something real in common,” wrote Wade. “Here’s the one thing we can’t do “ SILENCE OUR CHILD’S SPIRIT” Thank you for using your platform and sharing your family’s story! “Our kids are more than bedrooms, bathrooms and locker rooms.”
Boulware’s testimony went viral on Twitter once it was posted by the ACLU, and the attorney earned immense praise for his honesty and for the valuable use of his platform:
At the end of every anti-trans bill, there is a child and a family who will suffer devastating harm.

He emphasizes his daughter’s “spirit” and even the most religiously orthodox must recognize that’s what this is about: the spirit, the soul of a child, and letting gender match it, rather than crushing spirit to match gender. This is true spirituality: https://t.co/yTZ1Tnqrwe

There’s a whole industry set up to stroke the parental embarrassment this man used to feel towards his trans daughter.
When you read the articles, websites, crowdfunders, lawsuits, and books attempting to justify forcing your child into their birth sex role, that is the sell. https://t.co/kpdPedFu9i

I need 3 minutes and 26 seconds of your time.
And then I need you to ask others to take 3 minutes and 26 seconds of their time.
And then maybe they’ll ask some friends.
This is really, really, really simple. https://t.co/dxF8EQ0Bgt

This father’s narrative is consistent with interviews I’ve done with tons of other parents of trans kids. Letting these kids be who they are is about letting them *live* instead of forcing constant misery upon them. https://t.co/jOeCnzFQYN

This man’s honesty–that he once denied his trans daughter her identity “to protect myself”–goes right to the child-consuming narcissism & selfishness of this latest round of anti-trans politics. https://t.co/DocYlvG6IU
