Chris Cuomo Calls Out CBS For Cutting Off Vance’s Mic During Fact-Check: ‘He Was Right and the Moderators Wouldn’t Let Him Correct it’

NewsNation host Chris Cuomo called out CBS for cutting off JD Vance’s mic at the vice presidential debate as moderator Margaret Brennan hit him with a fact check.

During Tuesday’s debate between Vance and Tim Walz, moderated by Brennan and Norah O’Donnell, Vance’s past comments about Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio were called out, specifically his spreading a false claim that immigrants in the city were eating family pets. State and city officials have debunked this claim.

Vance did not address the pet eating story directly, but pointed to illegal immigration as an issue hurting communities like Springfield.

“Just to clarify for our viewers, Springfield, Ohio, does have a large number of Haitian migrants who have legal status, temporary protected status,” Brennan said.

“Margaret, the rules were that you guys weren’t going to fact-check. And since you are fact-checking me, I think it’s important to say what’s actually going on,” Vance responded.

There were no actual rules stating that fact checks would not be allowed, but CBS did announce before the debate that moderators would mainly “facilitate” and sparingly interrupt for fact checks.

Vance explained that the way to get temporary legal status has been greatly expanded and made easier, adding pressure to communities, and in the middle of this explanation, his mic was cut off.

“So there’s an application called the CBP One app, where you can go on as an illegal migrant, apply for asylum or apply for parole, and be granted legal status at the wave of a Kamala Harris open border wand,” Vance said.

Cuomo called out the fact check, saying Vance was right and there’s more “nuance” to the situation than CBS was making it seem.

“When they were talking, at one point Vance wanted to correct something about how Haitians got into this country and he was right and the moderators wouldn’t let him correct it. It’s very interesting,” he said.

The NewsNation host also argued the moment only detracted from the debate because it makes the moderators themselves part of the news cycle.

“Vance was right, okay? There’s nuance to it, but the bigger problem is why he was moved on? ‘We’ve got so much to get to.’ Says who? What is the schedule here? You have a list of topics? That’s not what this is about,” Cuomo said. “It’s about how the American people can access these two men and the two theories and the narratives and you’ve got to let them have their speak.”
