Scott Jennings Explains Why Voters Backed ‘Authentic’ Candidates Like Trump And AOC: ‘People Are Sick Of Fake Politicians’

Conservative CNN analyst Scott Jennings explained the overlap in voter support for President-elect Donald Trump and progressive Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez by branding both part of an “authentic class” of politicians different from what people are used to.

Jenning’s take came as the panel on CNN NewsNight reviewed the responses from voters after Ocasio-Cortez, who backed Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential bid, opened the floor to her followers on Instagram, seeking to learn from those who voted for Trump and her, or another down ballot Democrat.

The lawmaker then posted responses from dozens of followers, with many who split their tickets between Ocasio-Cortez and Trump citing the economy and the conflict in Gaza as their reasoning.

Analyzing the move and response, Jennings offered the following take:

People are sick and tired of fake inauthentic politicians who can only operate off a script, who are handed things by consultants, whose every movement and facial expression is rehearsed and the thing Trump and AOC have in common is they both appear to be authentically speaking what’s on their mind. It’s the change of day and sometimes they’re contradictory and say things that make you lift an eyebrow.

Host Abby Phillip agreed: “I think you’re spot on.”

Reading back some of the responses to Ocasio-Cortez’s request, one voter said that the Democrat was “focused on the real issues people care about” while another wrote: “Trump and you care for the working class, wanted to change so I voted for trump and blue for the rest of the ballots to push some brakes. Both of you force boundaries and growth.”

Phillip continued: “I hear when voters say it’s about populism and the working class, but I think it’s also about the tone, the vibe, of the candidate themselves. And how they approach
voters, whether they’re believable.”
