What the Hell is Going On With the Internet Today? Outages Throughout the Country
If you are using the Internet today, which you are, you may have noticed some significant slowdown or drop outs. It’s not just you. This is happening everywhere.
Just what in tarnations is going on here? Is the cyber-apocalypse upon us or does the nation’s router just need a good, hard reset?
Well, information is scant but the problems seem to be due to a major outage on the part of Comcast’s Xfinity service.
The Internet is spotty throughout a large swath of the country, with users issuing complaints in Seattle, New York City, Florida and just about everywhere else. The company claims a 56 percent market share in the United States, meaning more than half of the country could be facing outages today.
The problems seem to have started around 1 p.m. and, as of this writing, many customers are still unable to get online, with others reporting slow and intermittent service.
It must be noted, however, the problem seems to only effect the web, with television and, gasp, phone services remaining uninterrupted. Yay.
Comcast has commented on the outages, noting that they are aware of the issues and are working to correct them.
Of course, that is exactly what they would say if aliens were invading small town America, or if they just wanted to keep people from seeing the infamous koi clip. We’re on to you Comcast.
In the meantime, until service is restored, you can always read a book or go outside or whatever.
Update 9:13 p.m: Comcast has issued a statement and Internet services seem to have been restored.
“On Monday, November 6th, our network experienced a service disruption affecting some customers with IP-based services. The disruption was caused by a configuration error. We know how important these services are to our customers. Our technicians were able to restore service within approximately 90 minutes.”
