MSNBC Hosts Accuse JD Vance of ‘Mansplaining’ His Way Through Fact Check at Debate
MSNBC hosts Nicolle Wallace and Rachel Maddow accused JD Vance of “mansplaining” his way through a fact check at the vice presidential debate.
Vance got into a heated exchange with CBS News debate moderator Margaret Brennan when she offered a fact check about the city of Springfield, Ohio. Vance’s comments were originally in response to Tim Walz blasting him for spreading a false story about Haitian migrants eating family pets in Springfield, Ohio, something that’s been debunked by city and state officials.
Vance discussed issues stemming from illegal immigration and the southern border, and Brennan noted, “Just to clarify for our viewers, Springfield, Ohio, does have a large number of Haitian migrants who have legal status, temporary protected status.”
Vance accused Brennan of breaking the “rules,” though there was no rule saying there would be no fact checks, only one stating that debate moderators would only fact check if they deem it necessary. Vance’s mic was then cut as he discussed streamlined processes for illegal immigrants to receive temporary legal status.
“So there’s an application called the CBP One app, where you can go on as an illegal migrant, apply for asylum or apply for parole, and be granted legal status at the wave of a Kamala Harris open border wand,” he said as Brennan gave him a “thank you” for explaining the “legal” process.
In post election coverage on MSNBC, Wallace said it was likely Vance’s “worst moment” for women, claiming his plan was to “mansplain” over the muted mic, disrespecting the moderators.
“I actually think if you’re a woman, that might be the the worst moment JD Vance had because he was going to mansplain right over that mute button. He was, and again, I don’t pretend to know how everyone will react to this, I think that a lot of women in positions of authority that should command respect just by virtue of that dynamic will see themselves and some dude that, disrespected them and talk over them,” she said.
Maddow agreed and also knocked Vance’s actual explanation he’s still incorrect to widely call Springfield migrants “illegal immigrants.”
“The substance of that moment was when he was lying about immigrants in Springfield, Ohio again, and Tim Walz had called him out on it and then was saying, oh, no, no, no, I’m not lying, let me tell you why I’m calling them illegal immigrants even though they are not illegal immigrants and let me mansplain the law to you,” she said.
